Sports Update Monday: Dolphins Fall Short in OT to Pesky Jets

Category: Blog

The Miami Dolphins (1-2) suffered an overtime loss by the hands of their hated AFC East division rival, the New York Jets (2-1). After two missed Dan Carpenter field goals, a knee injury to Dolphins star RB Reggie Bush, a few mental errors by rookie QB Ryan Tannehill, a lackluster overly conservative play call, and a botched “icing the kicker” attempt, the Jets took advantage of the Dolphins’ impressive start. Nick Folk hit the game-winning field goal 6 minutes into overtime on his second attempt to put the Dolphins away. Randy Starks blocked Folk’s first attempt, but due to an “icing the kicker” timeout from Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin, the Jets were able to re-kick. Miami had a chance to win it earlier in the overtime period, but the Dolphins usually productive kicker Dan Carpenter missed a 48 yard attempt to seal the game.

Notes

– Dolphins RB Reggie Bush left the game in the second quarter with an apparent knee injury and did not return. However, he is scheduled for an MRI today, but the Dolphins’ staff believes the injury isn’t a serious one.

– Jets pro-bowl CB Darelle Revis left the game with a non-contact knee injury in the third quarter and did not return. His MRI is scheduled for Today. The Jets’ staff feels this injury could be a serious one, perhaps something ACL related.

– This is former Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano’s first return to Miami after being fired last season. He is now the Jets offensive coordinator.

– Tim Tebow struggled in his first game back at Sun Life Stadium since last year’s OT comeback win against the Dolphins during week 7. Tebow finished with 0 yards on 2 carries, a first down on a fake punt, and he was hit in the head by a pass from Jets QB Mark Sanchez.
