Friday Local Business Spotlight: Spyke’s Grove
Every Friday, here at BB Insurance Marketing, we like to give back to our community by showcasing one of our client’s businesses. This week we will be spotlighting a local tropical nursery and farmer’s market called Spyke’s Grove. Spyke’s is located in Davie, Florida on Griffin Road, in between University Drive and Davie Road. Spyke’s is a third generation family business, started over 70 years ago as a small grocery store in downtown Ft. Lauderdale by H.L. Spyke and a friend from the Navy. In 1950, in an effort to keep a steady supply of fresh fruit to the downtown store, a grove was purchased in Davie. As Ft. Lauderdale grew, people began stopping at the grove for fruit instead of driving into town. The grove became so popular with tourists and locals that the downtown location was sold and all efforts were focused on the Davie location.
Fast forward to present day and Spyke’s is coming full circle as they continue to grow their Green Market, sell landscape, palm trees, citrus trees and host monthly events. A staple of Spyke’s Grove is their Citrus, still grown by family in the northern part of the state. Spyke’s Citrus is known for its sweet and juicy flavor and personalized service that keeps customers coming back year after year.
Spyke’s Facts
– Every Thursday, Spyke’s hosts a Green Market from 3pm-7pm. The “Moonlight Market” is fun and full of healthy choices such as, organic beef, fresh eggs and chicken, organic produce, tropical fruit, gluten free cupcakes and more. The market also has wine tasting for Florida wines and live music.
– From the 1950’s through the 1970’s, Spyke’s had a roadside zoo on the property. Many adults who grew up in South Florida remember coming out to see the alligators, monkeys and even a bear!
– Spyke’s has been in business for over 70 years and one of their mottos is, “helping South Floridians grow their own backyard paradise for over 70 years”.
