Kids Menu Restaurant Showdown

The National Restaurant Association is having a contest for the restaurants with the best kid’s menus. The NRA wants to find the healthiest and the best recipes for kids. “We designed the initiative to be a fun and creative way to showcase healthful menu options, and a source of inspiration for foodservice operators and chefs to continue to add those options to their menus,” said Dawn Sweeney, the NRA’s president and CEO. They have four categories you can enter: independent restaurants or companies with fewer than 20 menu items; multi-unit companies with more than 20 menu items; contract-managed foodservices; and independent noncommercial foodservices. The judges will be a panel of industry professionals and elementary students. (via restaurant.org)

Fast Food…Not Fat Food

A new Florida restaurant has given new meaning to the term fast food. Energy Kitchen in Fort Lauderdale, is a quick and healthy alternative to most fast food chains you see in town. Energy Kitchen’s motto is “fast not fat food”. To put it simply, this means all items are less than 500 calories. Instead of being fried, hot foods are steamed, grilled or baked, and all buns and wraps are whole-grain, and of course, dressings are fat-free. Energy Kitchen’s website lists the complete nutritional facts with each menu item as well. They also offer free delivery (some restrictions). (via Miami Herald)
