Sports Update Monday: US Soccer Fan Club President Safe after Falling from Window
It was an intense evening for hundreds of soccer fans at a South Florida bar and not just because of Sunday’s exciting U.S.-Portugal World Cup match. Diehard soccer fan Eric Corey fell from the second-story window at Fado Irish Pub in Mary Brickell Village, landing on an awning below. He barely moved as several men held up the awning to prevent it from collapsing while waiting for a Miami Fire Rescue crew to arrive.
Just as a firefighter arrived to lower him from the awning, Corey gave the crowd a thumbs up sign. Moments later, people cheered as he made it down a ladder with the firefighter’s help. 7News had spoken to Corey about the highly anticipated U.S.-Portugal game just a few hours before the incident. “The United States is going to shock the world during this World Cup,” he said.
Corey was among hundreds of people rooting for Team USA inside and outside Fado Irish Pub. The bar was flooded with fans dressed in red, white and blue. “We’re going to go all the way to the World Cup, not even a question asked. That’s it,” said a fan. “This year, it’s the United States this year.” “It’s time for USA,” chimed in another admirer as he held up a beer bottle.
Corey is the president of the Miami Chapter of the American Outlaws, a national support group for U.S. men’s soccer. He said he helped organize the celebration held at Fado on Sunday. “This is a culmination of all of our work,” he said. “It has been amazing today.”
It was an evening filled with chants and cheers as Team USA battled Portugal on the field and went goal for goal with their Iberian adversaries, ending the match in a 2-2 tie. This outcome means the U.S. team has failed to automatically advance to the next stage in the World Cup. After his fall, Corey was taken away in a stretcher. Shortly thereafter, a status posted on the American Outlaws Miami Chapter’s Facebook page read: “Hey, Outlaws, I am alive and uninjured. Thank you for the prayers and best wishes.”
