Inside The Industry: Giant African Snails found on Homes in South Florida
State agriculture authorities say 50 Giant African Land Snails were found on a homeowner’s property in Broward County. A news release from the agriculture department said a tip from a Davie homeowner on Tuesday led to the capture of the snails. The largest of the snails was four inches long.
The snails reproduce rapidly and consume at least 500 different types of plants. Scientists also say the snails can damage buildings, destroys crops and can cause meningitis in humans. But some people still want to collect, and even eat, the slimy invaders.
On Tuesday, Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam announced that officials had rid Miami-Dade County of 140,000 of the invasive, slimy slow-moving snails and touted an eradication program that was supposed to keep the snails contained to Miami-Dade County.
