November 1st is a monumental day around the world for mustache enthusiasts. That’s right…November marks the start of “Movember”, a month long event to raise awareness of prostate cancer and other male cancer initiatives. How is this money raised, you ask? By growing and grooming a mustache the entire month of November. That’s it!

Movember was started in Melbourne, Australia in 2003, and since its conception it has spread from Australia to New Zealand, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom South Africa, Ireland, Finland, the Netherlands, Spain, Denmark, Norway, Belgium and the Czech Republic. In America, the money raised from Movember goes directly to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, the LIVESTRONG Foundation, Movember’s Global Action Plan and research and awareness.

Here’s how the program works. Register online at Movember’s website, sign up as a team or an individual, then advertise yourself or your team to friends, strangers or co-workers to donate to the cause. However, you must follow the official rules of conduct for growing and grooming your mustache (From Movember’s website):

1. Once registered at Movember.com each mo bro must begin the 1st of November with a clean shaven face.

2. For the entire month of November each mo bro must grow and groom a mustache.

3. There is to be no joining of the mo to (one’s) sideburns. (That’s considered a beard.)

4. There is to be no joining of the handlebars to (one’s) chin. (That’s considered a goatee.)

5. Each mo bro must conduct himself like a true country gentleman.

In 2013, Movember raised $121 million dollars worldwide with 969,188 registered participants. The participants and the dollar amount have been rising since 2003 (about $514 million dollars total), so it’s up to us to keep the movement going. Movember also has prizes and events for the team or individual that raises the most money or grows the best mustache. It’s time to put your money where your mustache is, people. Head on over to Movember.com and register today!
