High Tides Flooding Coastal Ft. Lauderdale Neighborhoods

They are called King Tides, or seasonal high tides, but some may prefer to call them a royal pain. And they’re expected to continue flooding South Florida’s coastal neighborhoods through Friday. Drivers were forced to navigate flooded roadways in eastern neighborhoods off of Las Olas Boulevard but there were no reports of water entering homes, city spokeswoman Shannon Vezina said Tuesday

Most vulnerable to flooding in Fort Lauderdale were the neighborhoods of Rio Vista, along Cordova Road and Southeast 12th Street, and Las Olas Isles, along Mola Avenue, Hendricks Isle and Coconut Isle Drive, city officials said.

Public works crews monitored and installed tidal valves, checked storm drains for any clogging and ensured pump stations were working efficiently, she said. Workers also built a temporary sand berm along Coconut Isle Drive to control flooding.

A coastal flooding advisory issued by the National Weather Service remained in effect through midnight Wednesday for low-lying areas of Broward and Miami-Dade counties. Flooding resulting from King Tides are linked to lunar cycles and peak at high tide— at about 10 a.m. and 10:30 p.m. Tuesday and 11 a.m Wednesday.

Tide gauges at several locations along South Florida’s coast have measured tides at about a foot above normal, said meteorologist Brad Diehl, of the National Weather Service in Miami. Cycles of the high tides are again expected in late October and late November.

Flood insurance provides protection for destruction and financial devastation caused by floods. Although it may not seem like much even a few inches of water can cause serious damage; resulting in thousands of dollars in repair and restoration costs. Homeowners insurance does not cover floods. Purchasing a flood insurance policy through BB Insurance Marketing, Inc. can protect you.

Although it may not seem as necessary as homeowners insurance, flood insurance is important if you want to keep your home safe and your possessions secure. Flood coverage offers protection against losses that result from heavy and lengthy rain falls, storm surges, blocked storm drainage systems, snow melts, etc.

Don’t wait until it’s too late. Contacting BB Insurance Marketing, Inc. today will get you on the path to flood protection with an affordable and comprehensive insurance policy.
